20,000 Scientists, the ones who put their face on climate change!

1992, the first warning for the humanity of scientists

About 1,700 of the world’s leading scientists, including the majority of Nobel laureates in science, launched this appeal in November 1992. Henry Way Kendall, Nobel Prize for Physics (1990), then President of the Union of Concerned Scientists – (UCS), published a document entitled “Warning for humanity from world scientists” (World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity), warning that “Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course.”

Pointing to growing problems such as dead zones in the oceans, the destruction of biodiversity, climate change and the continuing growth of the human population, the scientists have argued that “a major change is needed in our management of the Earth and life on it, if we want to avoid a huge human misery”.

2017, the second warning for the humanity of scientists

Twenty-five years after this terrible initial warning, more than 15,000 scientists from 184 countries, today are more than twenty thousand, have signed a letter much more urgent to humanity. Led by William Ripple, an ecologist from Oregon State University, the “second warning” to humanity warns that we are on a collision course with the natural world, and that “soon it will be too late to change course away from our failed trajectory.”

“Since 1992, with the exception of the stabilization of the stratospheric ozone layer, humanity has not made sufficient progress in generally solving these expected environmental challenges, and alarmingly, most of them are getting much worse,” the scientists write.

In particular, the authors fear that the increase in greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel use, deforestation and agricultural production will significantly increase the risk of catastrophic climate change. While the growing population continues to stress ecosystems, more communities will face water shortages, crop failures and growing unrest.

The authors write: “By failing to adequately limit population growth, reassess the role of an economy rooted in growth, reduce greenhouse gases, incentivise renewable energy, protect habitats, restore ecosystems, halt pollution, stop defaunation and limit invasive alien species, humanity is not taking the urgent measures necessary to safeguard our endangered biosphere.

Globally, freshwater resources continue to run out, oceanic dead zones continue to expand, and the amount of species and forestry continues to plummet at unprecedented rates. Our growing population, land use and use of fossil fuels are threatening the very foundations of life on Earth.

“Scientists analyze data and look at long-term consequences,” Ripple said in a press release. “Those who signed this second warning do not just sound an alarm. They are recognizing the obvious signs that we are on an unsustainable path.

On the website of the Alliance of Scientists of the World you can find those who have put their face on us against climate change. The Alliance of World Scientists (AWS) is a new international assembly of scientists, which is independent of governmental and non-governmental organizations and societies.
